Grain door. False bottom. Room for ~13 kg of grain.
The BrewTaurus K40 Mash Tun is a 48.1 L mash tun in 304 stainless: laser-cut false bottom, 150 × 250 mm grain door with chute and 1.5" Tri-Clamp ports throughout. Pair it with the K40 HLT for HERMS, or with the K40 Boil Kettle for a two-vessel brew day. Spent grain leaves through the door, not over your head.
| Brim-full volume | 48.1 L |

| Max grain bill | ~13 kg at 2.6 L/kg · ~14 kg at 2.4 L/kg |
| Volume under false bottom | 2 L |
| False bottom height | 33 mm above the lowest point of the bottom |
| Grain door | 150 × 250 mm (clear opening 143 × 243 mm) |
| Ports | all 1.5" Tri-Clamp |
| Empty weight | ≈10.8 kg (vessel only) |

How much grain fits
| Mash thickness | Max grain | Strike water |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 L/kg (thick) | ~14 kg | ~34 L |
| 2.6 L/kg | ~13 kg | ~34 L |
| 3.0 L/kg (thin) | ~11.5 kg | ~35 L |
A 12 °P (OG 1.048) beer at 35 L into the fermenter needs ~7.9 kg. At maximum grain you reach ~18 °P (OG ~1.074) at 35 L. Strike water includes the liquor below the false bottom.
Built for real mash work
- Grain door 150 × 250 mm (clear opening 143 × 243 mm) — gasketed, locked by a crossbar with a hand knob, hinged and fully removable. Drain, open, rake the grain down the chute. No lifting a wet grain bed.
- Laser-cut 1.5 mm stainless false bottom on a drain-protection stand; runoff leaves through a centred 1.5" outlet in the dished bottom.
- Temperature port at 45°, 100 mm above the bottom seam, for a thermowell or probe.
- Recirculation return 50.8 mm below the rim · central 1.5" lid port for a CIP spray head.
- No heating port, by design. Hold mash temperature with HERMS (K40 HLT), RIMS or pre-heated strike water.

FAQ
How much grain does the K40 mash tun hold?
About 13 kg at a standard 2.6 L/kg mash, up to ~14 kg at a thick 2.4 L/kg (fly sparge). That brews a 35 L batch up to ~18 °P (OG ~1.074).
How much volume is under the false bottom?
2 L sits below the false bottom. The strike water figures on this page already include it.
Can I heat the mash tun directly?
No. It has no heating port. Keep the mash on temperature with a HERMS coil in the K40 HLT, a RIMS tube, or pre-heated strike water.
How does the spent grain come out?
Drain the tun, loosen the hand knob, swing the crossbar aside, open the door and rake the grain down the chute into a bucket. The door lifts off completely for cleaning.
Fly sparge or batch sparge?
Both work. The maximum grain figure assumes fly sparging; for batch sparging keep the grain bill lower so the sparge water fits under the rim.
Can I clean it in place?
Yes. Fit a 1.5" CIP spray head to the 1.5" lid port and recirculate cleaner with a pump strong enough to drive it, such as the MP-40RM.
Product photos may show a prototype or a different size; production units follow the manufacturing drawing.
Gravity figures assume 70 % brewhouse efficiency (65 % at maximum grain); your mill, malt and process will move them.
