Bottle fizz, by the spoonful. Dextrose is a simple sugar that yeast turns readily into CO₂ and alcohol — 3 g per 500 ml bottle to carbonate, or 1 kg to bring a 23 L beer kit up to strength.

What it does in your beer
Dextrose, also called glucose, is a simple sugar that yeast ferments easily. Dosed into the bottle, it gives the yeast just enough food to carbonate your beer.
Added to the fermenter, it raises the fermentable sugar and so the alcohol — which is why beer kits ask for it. It's the one ingredient where "a bit extra for luck" backfires: more sugar in the bottle means more fizz.

How much for a 20 L batch
Priming: 3 g per 500 ml is 6 g per litre — 120 g for 20 L of beer. For a single 330 ml bottle that's about 2 g.
Beer kits: the Mangrove Jack's Craft Series Golden Lager, Bavarian Wheat and IPA kits in our range each call for 1 kg of dextrose (or 1.2 kg of liquid malt extract) for 23 L.
How to use
- Batch priming: weigh 6 g per litre of beer, dissolve it in a little boiled water, let it cool and stir it gently into the beer before bottling.
- Bottle by bottle: add 3 g per 500 ml bottle, about 2 g per 330 ml.
- Beer kits: add the amount the kit instructions ask for — 1 kg for the 2.2 kg Mangrove Jack's kits in our range.
- The 3 g per 500 ml dose is a starting point; adjust it to the carbonation you want.
