Near-opaque black and a flavour like dark, bitter roast coffee. Crisp Roasted Barley is the grain that puts the roast in a stout.

1,200–1,500 EBC · ≈ 507 °L · 1–10 % of grist · Unmalted, roasted barley · Stouts · Sold per 100 g

What it does in your beer

Crisp roasts unmalted barley to make its darkest grain. The colour can be almost opaque; the flavour is deeply roasted with prominent smoky aromas, and a subtle bitterness shows at higher rates — Crisp compares it to a dark, bitter roast coffee.

Stouts are its home. Use 1–10 % of the grist depending on how much roast and colour you want; Crisp's own guideline is up to 5 %.

How much for a 20 L batch

On a typical 5 kg grist for 20 L, Crisp's 5 % guideline is 250 g; the top of the 1–10 % range is 500 g (5 × 100 g).

100 g in 20 L adds ≈ 24 EBC of colour on its own; 500 g adds ≈ 72 EBC and ≈ +5.1 gravity points (≈ +1.3 °P) at 75 % efficiency (approx., Morey / extract-based; mid 1,350 EBC, extract 71.5 %, moisture 2.0 %).

Quantity is in 100 g units, so for the 250 g guideline order 3 (300 g) and weigh out what you need.

How to use

  • Add it to the mash together with your base malt.
  • Dark grains acidify the mash — Crisp advises adjusting your brewing salts to match.
  • Bitterness climbs with the dose, so go up in 100 g steps rather than all at once.
  • No mill? Crushed roasted barley goes straight into the mash — within about 5 days of delivery.

Pairs well with

Brewing a dry stout? Try it on a base of Crisp Finest Maris Otter® with SafAle S-04.

Want a softer, more chocolatey stout? Add BESTMALZ BEST Chocolate; for an oatmeal stout, add oat flakes.

Storage & shelf life

  • Store it dry and sealed; Crisp's ideal temperature for its grains is 5–15 °C, away from strong odours.
  • Crisp suggests using its products within 2–3 months of delivery; well-stored, up to two years from production.
  • If it came crushed, it belongs in this week's stout: use it within about 5 days of delivery.

Good to know

  • Strictly speaking it isn't malt: Crisp roasts raw, unmalted barley.
  • The quantity box counts 100 g units, so 3 = 300 g.
  • Whole grain or Crushed is your call in the Milling option; Crushed is milled before it ships and should be brewed within about 5 days.
  • It ships from our partner warehouse in the Czech Republic, separately from any equipment on the same order.
  • Contains barley, a cereal containing gluten.

FAQ

Roasted barley or chocolate malt?
Roasted barley is unmalted and brings a dark, bitter roast-coffee flavour. BESTMALZ BEST Chocolate is a gently roasted malt with chocolate and a mild coffee note, roasted to avoid bitterness.

Is roasted barley malted?
No. Crisp makes it from unmalted barley.

Why did my mash pH drop?
Dark grains acidify the mash. Crisp recommends adjusting your brewing salts to compensate.

Is it crushed?
Only with the Crushed option, which is milled before dispatch and best brewed within about 5 days. Whole grain ships as it is.
