Softer, fuller, creamier. Unmalted oat flakes are loaded with beta-glucans that thicken the body of a New England IPA or a stout and leave a creamy feel behind every sip.

What it does in your beer
Oats bring a high level of beta-glucans. In the finished beer that means more fullness and a creamy sensation on the palate — which is why they turn up in New England IPAs, stouts and similar beers.
They have no enzymes of their own. The malt in the mash does the converting, which is why the 20 % ceiling matters.

How much for a 20 L batch
Up to 20 % of the malt weight. On 5 kg of malt that's up to 1 kg — one bag.
The 20 % covers all unmalted ingredients together, so if wheat flakes are going in too, they share the allowance.
How to use
- Add the flakes to the mash together with your crushed malt.
- Keep all unmalted ingredients at or below 20 % of the malt weight so the mash converts properly.
- Add rice hulls. Unmalted ingredients make lautering harder, and rice hulls are recommended every time you use them.
Pairs well with
Brewing a NEIPA? Try it with wheat flakes for extra haze, BESTMALZ BEST Pale Ale as the base, Citra in the dry hop and Lallemand New England yeast.
