Fermenter, unitank or bright beer tank — which do I need?

A fermenter (CF) and a unitank (UT) are the same 2.0 bar jacketed vessel. The difference is what happens after fermentation. In a fermenter the beer ferments and is then pumped to a bright beer tank (BBT), where it clears, carbonates and is served or packaged — the classic two-tank route, and the fermenter is free for the next batch sooner. A unitank does all of it in one vessel: it ships with a rotary racking arm, spunding valve and carbonation stone, so you ferment, carbonate and pour straight from the tank without a BBT. Rule of thumb: brewpub or taproom pouring from the tank → unitanks; production brewery packaging or serving from bright tanks → fermenters + one BBT per 2–3 fermenters. Above 500 L we supply fermenters and bright tanks only.

How it works

1 · Configure
Order components online, or send us your project. We confirm voltage, ports, manways and branding before anything goes to production.
2 · Production
Built in a verified OEM production run and pressure-tested, then test-run on camera. 50% deposit at order; the balance is due before your unit leaves production — after you have approved the test-run photos and video.
3 · Delivery & commissioning
Components approx. 12–16 weeks, complete systems 14–18 weeks, including sea freight and customs. DAP to your door anywhere in the EU. Positioning and hook-up follow our step-by-step guide; our Prague team walks you through commissioning on a video call. Terms of sale.

Three tiers, one architecture

Tier For Monthly output (how it's calculated) How to buy
PRO 100 Brewpubs, pilot brewing, kombucha 200–1,200 L
2–6 fermenters × 100 L × 1–2 turns · up to 12 brews/month
Order online
PRO 200 Taprooms, restaurant breweries 800–2,400 L
4–6 fermenters × 200 L × 1–2 turns · up to 12 brews/month
Order online · system by quote
PRO 500 Production breweries, kombucha at scale 2,000–6,000 L
4–6 fermenters × 500 L × 1–2 turns · up to 12 brews/month
Order online · system by quote

Monthly output = fermenters × volume × turns. Ales turn a fermenter in ~2 weeks including cleaning (2 turns/month); lagers need ~4 weeks (1 turn). Real output depends on your recipes and schedule — the ranges assume a realistic ale/lager mix.

Example build: a 200L brewpub, ready to pour

Target around 1,500–2,000 litres a month, serving straight from the tanks. The complete setup — nothing else needed to brew:

BH-200 3-Vessel Electric Brewhouse — HLT, mash/lauter, kettle/whirlpool, pump, PHE, PID controls €22,990
UT-250 Unitank (2.0 bar) — ferment, carbonate and serve from the tank €18,360
3HP Glycol Chiller + 500L Glycol Water Tank €10,080
50L CIP Cart + Malt Mill 200 kg/h €6,280
Complete brewery, delivered & CE documented ≈ €57,710 incl. VAT
≈ €47,700 excl. VAT (B2B reverse charge)

What it produces: on ales the four unitanks turn twice a month — ~2,000 L across 8 brew days; on lagers ~1,000 L; a realistic mixed program lands around 1,500 L/month. The unitanks are 2.0 bar vessels, so you carbonate and serve straight from the tank — no separate serving tanks needed to start.

Rough variable cost per litre (ingredients and energy only — malt, hops, yeast, water, brewing energy, CO2, cleaning chemicals): approximately €0.30–0.45/litre — a hoppy ale at the top of the range, a simple lager near the bottom. At 1,500 L/month that is roughly €450–680 of variable production cost. Rent, labour, taxes and excise duty are not included — this is brewing cost only, for orientation.

Frequently asked questions

What certification and documentation comes with the equipment?
Every unit is CE marked and delivered with an EU Declaration of Conformity, an operation manual and, for product-contact vessels, a food-contact material declaration (Reg. (EC) 1935/2004). Pressure-rated vessels are manufactured to EN 13445 under a PED 2014/68/EU Module H quality system and carry a serial-numbered Declaration of Conformity for the specific unit — the document a workplace or hygiene inspection will ask to see. BrewTaurus places the equipment on the EU market under its own brand and is responsible for this documentation.

What is the difference between a fermenter and a unitank?
Nothing in the steel — both are the same jacketed conical, rated 2.0 bar. A fermenter (CF) is for fermentation only; the finished beer is transferred to a bright beer tank for carbonation and serving, which frees the fermenter sooner and suits breweries that package. A unitank (UT) comes with a rotary racking arm, spunding valve and carbonation stone, so you ferment, carbonate and pour from the same tank — ideal for brewpubs and taprooms with limited space. If you serve from the tank, choose unitanks; if you package or run several fermenters per bright tank, choose fermenters. We confirm the right mix with every quote.

Why is it “made to order” — can't I buy from stock?
Professional brewing equipment is configured to your space, voltage and process, so each unit is built to order. Components can be ordered online directly; complete systems are quoted per project.

How long until I'm brewing?
Components approx. 12–16 weeks, complete systems 14–18 weeks — manufacturing plus sea freight and customs clearance. We confirm a production slot with every order and keep you updated.

How does payment work?
Components: full payment online. Systems: after you approve the quotation we issue a pro-forma invoice — 50% deposit to start production, the balance before the equipment leaves production, once you have approved the pre-shipment test-run photos and video of your unit. Prices include EU VAT; B2B customers with a valid EU VAT number order at 0% VAT (reverse charge).

Who installs the equipment?
Delivery is DAP — to your door, anywhere in the EU. Positioning and utility hook-up (power, water, glycol lines) are done on site by you or your local technician following our step-by-step installation guide; every connection is tri-clamp or plug-in, so no specialist welding is needed. Commissioning — first fill, pressure checks, control setup and the first brew — is guided live by our Prague team over a video call. On-site commissioning by our technician can be quoted for complete systems.

What warranty do I get?
3–5 years on main vessels and 1 year on fittings and components, with 24-hour response and air-freight spare parts. See full terms of sale.

Can I use it for kombucha?
Yes — the same stainless architecture handles kombucha. See the Kombucha collection.
