Single-pass counterflow chiller — copper wort core, PEX water jacket, duotight-ready.

The Red Reaper chills near-boiling wort to pitching temperature in one pass. Hot wort runs through the inner copper tube while cold water flows the opposite way through a tough PEX jacket, giving plate-chiller speed with far better tolerance for hops and trub.

How a counterflow chiller works

Hot wort flows through the inner copper tube while cold mains water flows through the outer jacket in the opposite direction. This counter-current design pulls the temperature down from near-boiling to pitching in one pass — similar efficiency to a plate chiller, but with much better hop tolerance.

What is PEX?

PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) is a flexible, high-temperature, high-pressure plumbing material widely used as a modern alternative to copper. It handles hot/cold cycling well, resists bursting, and makes the chiller lighter and easier to route than an all-copper design.

Specifications

Clean & care: Recirculate boiling wort for the last 15 minutes of the boil to sanitise. After use, flush immediately, then circulate an alkaline brewery wash (~80 °C) for at least 5 minutes, reversing flow a few times to strip deposits. Keep it out of direct sunlight (UV degrades PEX), don't leave it soaking in acidic sanitiser (acids attack copper), and dry fully before storage.
