Saaz in the family tree, passion fruit in the glass. Riwaka turns its Czech parentage up to full volume: passion fruit, grapefruit and a streak of pine.

What it does in your beer

Riwaka is an aroma hop, full stop. Expect intense tropical fruit led by passion fruit, over a grapefruit-citrus core with a little pine. The breeder rates its oil content at almost double that of its Saaz parent, and that oil is what carries through to the glass.

It was bred in New Zealand from "Old Line" Saaz and local breeding selections, and released in 1997. The breeder points it at New Zealand pilsners and pale ales, and at bigger beers such as IPAs and imperial pilsners.

How to use

  • Last boil addition and whirlpool: this is where Riwaka starts to earn its place.
  • Dry hop: the main event. Save most of the bag for the fermenter.
  • Hot whirlpool? Above about 60 °C some bitterness still dissolves, so a big charge adds IBU as well as aroma.
  • Need bitterness? At 4.5–6.5 % alpha it's not the efficient choice — bitter with a higher-alpha hop and keep Riwaka for the finish.

Pairs well with

Brewing a New Zealand-style pilsner? Build it on Czech Pilsner Malt, ferment with SafLager W-34/70 and team Riwaka with Motueka late and in the dry hop.

Want an extra aroma boost at the end? Amplifire Riwaka hop oil is in our range too.

Storage & shelf life

  • Keep it sealed, cold, dry and dark — heat, oxidation and light are what cost a hop its aroma.
  • Growers recommend storing hops as close to freezing as possible; a short spell in the fridge at about +2 °C is fine.
  • Opened the pack? Press out the air, reseal and use it while it's fresh.

FAQ

When should I add Riwaka?
Late: the last boil addition, the whirlpool and, above all, the dry hop.

Can I bitter with Riwaka?
You can, but it's not efficient: 10 g boiled for 60 minutes gives about 6 IBU in 20 L (approx., Tinseth, OG 1.050, mid alpha 5.5 %).

What does Riwaka smell like?
Passion fruit-led tropical fruit, grapefruit citrus and a hint of pine.

Is Riwaka related to Saaz?
Yes. It's a triploid bred from "Old Line" Saaz and New Zealand breeding selections, released in 1997.
