Deep, rich caramel, a subtle smoky-spice finish and a reddish glint in the glass. Light Crystal is how a British bitter gets its colour and depth.

145–165 EBC (IoB) · 61–69 °L · Up to 10 % of grist · Deep caramel · Crystal malt · Sold per 100 g

What it does in your beer

Crisp makes Light Crystal by raising the temperature further in its crystal process, so the endosperm darkens and the flavour develops further. The result is an intense caramel flavour — deep and rich, with a subtle smoky-spice aftertaste — and a reddish hue.

It belongs in bitters and best bitters, milds, ruby beers, ESB and amber ales, and adds caramel depth to pale ales, brown ales, porters and stouts. Crisp recommends up to 10 % of the grist.

How much for a 20 L batch

Crisp recommends up to 10 % of the grist. On a typical 5 kg grist for 20 L that's up to 500 g — order up to 5 × 100 g.

100 g in 20 L adds ≈ 5.8 EBC of colour on its own; 500 g adds ≈ 17.4 EBC and ≈ +4.9 gravity points (≈ +1.2 °P) at 75 % efficiency (approx., Morey / extract-based; mid 170 EBC by EBC method, extract 71.8 %, moisture 5.0 %).

Quantity is counted in 100 g units, so 5 gets you the full 500 g.

How to use

  • Mash it alongside your base malt — at up to 10 % it is a flavour and colour malt, not the foundation.
  • The first 100 g already adds about 6 EBC in 20 L (approx.), so adjust colour in 100 g steps.
  • Order in 100 g steps: 300 g = 3, 500 g = 5.
  • No mill? Crushed arrives ready to mash; use it within about 5 days.

Pairs well with

Storage & shelf life

  • Crisp's ideal is 5–15 °C, dry and sealed, somewhere odour-free — malt soaks up moisture from the air.
  • Crisp suggests using malt within 2–3 months of delivery; stored well, it remains usable for up to two years from production.
  • Took the Crushed option? Then brew within about 5 days of it arriving.

FAQ

What does the 150 mean?
Crisp names its crystal malts after their colour in EBC. This one is around 150 EBC (145–165 EBC by the IoB method), which Crisp's analysis puts at 61–69 °L.

How much for a 20 L bitter?
Crisp's guideline is up to 10 % of the grist — on a 5 kg grist that's up to 500 g. Even 100 g adds about 6 EBC of colour (approx.).

Is it crushed?
Only if you select Crushed in the Milling option, in which case it's milled before dispatch and should go into a mash within about 5 days. Otherwise the kernels arrive whole.
