What it does in your beer
Maris Otter is a two-row winter barley, bred in 1965 from Pioneer and Proctor. Crisp malts it into what it calls a wonderfully sweet ale malt, with notes of baked bread and light toffee and a characteristic malt body.
Use it as 100 % of the grist or as the base under crystal and roasted malts: light, dark and strong milds, English ales and IPAs, golden ales, porters, stouts and barley wines.

How much for a 20 L batch
Up to 100 % of the grist. An all-Maris Otter beer on a typical 5 kg grist for 20 L takes 5,000 g — order 50 × 100 g.
Each 1 kg in 20 L adds ≈ +11.2 gravity points (≈ +2.8 °P) at 75 % efficiency. A 5 kg grist of it alone lands around OG 1.056 with ≈ 10 EBC of colour (approx., extract-based / Morey; mid 6.35 EBC by EBC method, extract 80.6 %, moisture 3.5 %).
The quantity you enter is in 100 g units; for 1 kg of Maris Otter®, type 10.
How to use
- Use it as the whole base, or lay crystal and roasted malts on top for bitters, porters, stouts and barley wines.
- Order in 100 g steps: 4.5 kg under crystal and roast is 45, a 5 kg all-Otter grist 50.
- No mill? The Crushed option is milled before dispatch — get it mashed within about 5 days.
- Got a mill? Order Whole grain and crush it on brew day.
