Intensely sweet malt, a hint of fruit loaf and hardly any colour. Crisp Extra Pale Ale Malt keeps golden ales, blondes and lagers properly pale.

2.5–3.5 EBC (IoB) · 1.5–1.9 °L · Up to 100 % of grist · Extract min. 80 % · Norfolk barley · Sold per 100 g

What it does in your beer

Crisp makes this extra pale malt from Norfolk-grown barley — the same barley as its Best Ale Malt — for low-colour styles such as lagers, blondes and pale ales, with moderate to high modification. In the beer you get intensely sweet maltiness and a subtle fruit-loaf aftertaste at 2.5–3.5 EBC.

It can be the whole grist in a lager or pale ale, or the pale foundation under specialty malts in hop-forward beers, where you want the hops rather than the malt colour to lead.

How much for a 20 L batch

Up to 100 % of the grist, so a typical 5 kg grist for 20 L can be all Extra Pale Ale: 5,000 g, or 50 × 100 g.

Each 1 kg in 20 L adds ≈ +11.0 gravity points (≈ +2.8 °P) at 75 % efficiency. A 5 kg grist of it alone lands around OG 1.055 with ≈ 7 EBC of colour (approx., extract-based / Morey; mid 3.35 EBC by EBC method, extract 80 %, moisture 4.5 %).

One unit is 100 g, which makes 10 units a kilo.

How to use

  • Use it as 100 % of the grist in lagers and pale ales, or as the base under specialty malts.
  • Order in 100 g steps: a 4 kg base under specialty malts is 40, an all-Extra Pale grist 50.
  • No mill? Take the Crushed option and plan to brew within about 5 days of delivery.
  • Own a mill? Order Whole grain and crush it on the day.

Pairs well with

Brewing an English golden ale? Try it with East Kent Golding hops and LalBrew Nottingham.

Going hop-forward? Pair it with Citra and SafAle US-05.

Storage & shelf life

  • Crisp recommends 5–15 °C in a dry, odour-free place, with the bag kept sealed.
  • Use it within 2–3 months of delivery for best results; Crisp rates well-stored malt usable for up to two years from production.
  • Crushed malt doesn't get the 2–3 months: mash it within about 5 days of delivery.

FAQ

Extra Pale Ale Malt or Maris Otter?
Colour and flavour. Extra Pale Ale Malt is 2.5–3.5 EBC (IoB) with intensely sweet maltiness; Crisp Finest Maris Otter® is 5.0–6.5 EBC (IoB) with notes of baked bread and light toffee.

Can I brew a lager with it?
Yes. Crisp rates it for up to 100 % of the grist in lagers and pale ales.

What OG from 5 kg in 20 L?
About 1.055, assuming 75 % efficiency (approx., extract-based); your own efficiency sets the final number.

Do you mill it?
If you choose Crushed in the Milling option, yes — just before dispatch, so brew within about 5 days. Whole grain ships unmilled.
