Golden, fuller-bodied and a touch tangy. BEST Pale Ale is the base malt for ales that need a proper malt backbone under the hops.

5–7 EBC · 2.3–3.1 °L · Up to 100 % of grist · Extract min. 80.5 % · Ale base malt · Sold per 100 g

What it does in your beer

BESTMALZ designs it for ales where a fuller golden colour and a tangier, fuller-bodied taste are wanted. Expect grain and malt up front with biscuit, bread and a gentle caramel note behind, at 5–7 EBC — noticeably more golden than Pilsner malt.

Mash it as 100 % of the grist for a pale ale, or put specialty malts on top for IPAs, NEIPAs, American pale ales, amber, golden and blonde ales, porters and stouts. BESTMALZ also lists it for Kölsch and Pilsener-style beers.

How much for a 20 L batch

Up to 100 % of the grist. On a typical 5 kg grist for 20 L, a beer brewed on this malt alone takes 5,000 g — order 50 × 100 g.

Every kilo in 20 L is worth ≈ +11.1 gravity points (≈ +2.8 °P) at 75 % efficiency. A 5 kg grist of it alone lands around OG 1.055 with ≈ 10 EBC of colour (approx., extract-based / Morey; mid 6 EBC, extract 80.5 %, moisture 4.9 %).

Remember that quantity means 100 g units: ten of them make a kilo.

How to use

  • Use it as the whole base, or lay crystal and specialty malts on top for colour and caramel.
  • Order in 100 g steps: 4 kg = 40, 5 kg = 50.
  • Crushed option: milled before dispatch — brew within about 5 days.
  • Milling at home? Whole grain it is — crush it just before you mash.

Pairs well with

Brewing an American pale ale or IPA? Try it with Cascade or Citra hops and SafAle US-05.

Want amber and caramel? Add Weyermann® CARAMUNICH® Type 1 — Weyermann recommends up to 10 % of the grist.
